Applying to Vet School: Your Essential Steps

Hints, tips and insight for planning a vet career

In this unique, online coaching course we help you step-by-step on your path towards becoming a vet. Guided by an experienced veterinary educator, you will explore the realities of a career in veterinary medicine, including the things vets wished they'd known before they started out.

You will also learn how to qualify as a veterinary surgeon in the UK, including how to research your options, build a strong UCAS application, and increase your chances of earning a place at vet school.

The course uses a range of podcasts, self-tests and coaching exercises to help investigate the following questions:

  • What’s it really like to be a veterinarian?
  • What job opportunities are linked to a veterinary degree - can I work in exotic animal/equine/zoo practice? How do I specialise? What if I don't want to be a clinical vet?
  • I’ve heard that veterinary medicine can be stressful and impact on mental health - is this true? What is being done to address this?
  • “It’s not about the money!” vs “... an unexpected level of debt”: What are the financial realities of working in veterinary medicine?
  • What can I do to prepare my application for vet school?
  • Work experience - how do I find a placement? How do I get the most out of my time on placement?
  • What’s it like to be interviewed at the UK vet schools?
  • Pitfalls and problems: What if I don’t get an interview? What happens if I don’t make my grades?

Note that this course is designed primarily for A-level students and their parents/guardians. Some of the content may also be relevant to vet school applicants following a non-traditional route, e.g. graduate entry. For further information, contact SkillsTree at [email protected].
